Frequently Asked Blogger Questions
FAQ’s by beginner bloggers. In the beginning, there are so many questions to be answered! So, I’ve decided to compile some of the most common questions I’ve heard into a blog post!
I plan to contiunally add to this post as I get more questions, so feel free to ask any questions you have in the comments section below!
Let’s get started!
1. HOW MUCH DOES STARTING A BLOG COST?
The only thing that you need in the beginning is hosting. There are a lot of other things you can buy, (such as themes or email lists) but the main thing you need is hosting.
If you go with my hosting company NameCheap, it’s as little as $3.88 a month with the monthly plan! That works out to be $46.56 a year.
And with NameCheap, you can start your first month for $1 with my link!
I go with the yearly plan because, in the end, it saves you money. The longer your subscription is, the cheaper it ends up being over time. With NameCheap, it is $22.88 a year (instead of $46.56!)
In general, hosting is very cheap. Like I said, there are other costs that go into starting a blog, but hosting is the only thing you have to have in the beginning. Everything else is great but extra!
2. CAN’T YOU JUST BLOG FOR FREE?
If money is tight, you can start a blog for free. However, if you’re looking to make money with your blog and turn it into a business I don’t recommend it! And here’s why:
DISADVANTAGES OF FREE BLOGGING PLATFORMS:
-LACK OF FEATURES
With the free version of any blogging platform, you have very limited features. It may not seem like a problem at first, but once you grow you will find yourself looking for the features you hear other self-hosted bloggers talking about!
Trust me, I started out on the paid version of WordPress.com and didn’t like it! Even the paid version of WordPress.com is limited!
-SWITCHING CAN BE A HASSLE
If your plan is to start out free and then switch to self-hosted later, this is an option, but it can be a lot harder.
Some people switch and find out that all the pictures they posted in blog posts didn’t transfer over. Among other problems, you will spend a lot of frustrating time on customer support and Google! (Again, I went this route too! Do not recommend it!)
-YOU DON’T OWN YOUR BLOG
This is the biggest downfall. You don’t actually own your blog. WordPress could take down your blog at any time and there is nothing that you can do about it!
You also can’t have a custom domain. So instead of your website link looking like YOURBLOGNAME.com it’ll look like YOURBLOGNAME.wordpress.com which doesn’t look very professional!
-LIMITED MONEY-MAKING OPTIONS
Some free platforms won’t allow you to use some of the features that are essential in making money with your blog! Businesses don’t start without a little up-front investment and a blog is the same way! You have to spend money in order to make money!
If any of these reasons don’t deter you from starting a free blog, I recommend starting on Medium or WordPress.com
3. HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO MAKE MONEY?
The money part. Probably one of the most frequently asked blogger questions. How long will it take to get to the money?
Most people will tell you 6 months. That seems to be the standard answer. Others will tell you a year, some people took a few years and some more took 10 years!
And one income report search on Pinterest will tell you some made money within 1-2 months.
So… what’s the true answer?
There are so many variants that go into making money with your blog it is so hard to give you a concrete answer!
It all depends on things like;
-The knowledge you have on blogging
-Your money-making plan
-How much time you have to work
-How hard you’re willing to work
-And so much more!
If you want to look at my personal blogging journey, I started blogging 2 years ago with no idea what I was doing. My first blog lasted less than a week, my second blog lasted a year and this blog here I made money my second-month blogging! So it really all depends!
4. IS BLOGGING DEAD?
The short answer? No. 1,000 times no! There are so many bloggers out there making tons of money online. Blogging is far from dead!
However, it is harder to start and make money blogging than it was, say, 10 years ago. That doesn’t mean it isn’t possible though!
5. IS IT STILL WORTH IT TO START A BLOG?
YES! YES! If you have a passion for writing and a will to share your story, yes. Do it. Starting a blog was single-handedly the best decision I’ve ever made! I do not regret a single thing.
Starting a blog can be a great way to create a life you love and get away from the dreaded 9-5. You do not have to always hate the job you are working at!
